There is some relief for diabetes patients in India. According to recent news on May 10, 2024, the NPPA (National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority) has reduced the prices of 41 essential drugs. For example Dapagliflozin metformin hydrochloride (used for managing blood sugar levels): now Rs 16 per tablet, down from Rs 30.
Even if you go to a Jan Aushadhi Kendra in India, these medicines can be even cheaper there.
Essential drugs are those necessary medications commonly used by patients. For example, diabetes, body pain, liver issues, antacids, infections and allergies
Diabetes is increasing in India day by day, even affecting young people due to poor lifestyle choices. India has one of the highest numbers of diabetes cases in the world, with over 10 crore diabetes patients in the country.
What is NPPA?
The NPPA is a regulatory body responsible for setting and revising the prices of pharmaceutical products in India. It enforces the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) and monitors the prices of both controlled and decontrolled drugs.
Pharmaceutical companies must immediately inform their dealers and stockists about these new lower prices.
As per NPPA, If any manufacturer or marketing company fails to comply with these new prices, they must repay the overcharged amount with interest according to the DPCO, 2013, and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
